Allow me to introduce myself. I am Sandy Ploy; a California native that, for the last 20+ years has been living in Milwaukee. I am a graphic designer, creative director, set stylist, creative strategist, project managing, get-stuff-done kind of gal. My hat rack runneth over. I live with Earle Grey, a cat who most definitely believes he is a human. And, well, I work. A lot. I have worked for publishers, photo studios, corporate retail, restaurants, bands, schools, museums. You name it, I've probably done it . Currently, I run my own freelance business, with clients that include one of Milwaukee's leading restaurant groups, Hospitality Democracy.
I am silly, sassy, excitable, loving, sarcastic, inspired, caring, tough, sensitive and generally a little wacky. But all of those attributes are what gives me the brain power to pull together abstract ideas into reality. A perfect example was in the early 2000's. I was known around Milwaukee as the Milwaukee Cupcake Queen. I was a blogger in the early heyday of food blogging and turned my blog into an online competition known as IronCupcake: Earth -- we had 500+ bakers all over the world who competed for prizes that I sought out from cupcake relevant manufacturers and retailers. I turned that online competition into a monthly competition between local bakers that started as a few folks in a bar and at its highpoint, 5 years later, it was 3000 attendees, 20 thousand cupcakes, celebrity judge Duff Goldman and more than $25K earned for the MSOE radio station. Ultimately, we were joined by 14 other cities in the US, UK and Canada that started satellites of IronCupcake, running similar competitions and helping local charities as well.
I am an avid foodie and find great enjoyment in the kitchen or on the trade show floor following food trends and integrating them into my home-cook life. I used to believe that meeting rockstars was unobtainable, so I started to focus on celebrity chefs. I have more than 40 photos in my kitchen with me and the likes of Eric Ripert, Graham Elliot, Fabio Viviani, Jaques Pepin and SO many more.
In 2014, I was invited to a meet and greet with an unknown cover band, who were, in reality several members of the Foo Fighters, my absolute number 1 band, forever. Wait...I really CAN meet rock stars! From that moment on, my love of rock and roll blossomed into my most recent adventures; which includes traveling more than 80K miles to see them live many times, receiving one of 50 silver keys sent to their most involved fans on social media and also meeting each of them at least once. I have even been tapped as the "Fooey Godmother" by fellow fans because of my creative and motherly ways of making people smile.
One year ago, as a result of my "Fooey Godmother" status, a young musician from the San Francisco Bay Area reached out to me to share his dream of jamming with Dave Grohl. A series of events to follow made his dream come true and a bond was formed. It was the birth of a musical partnership that has proven to be exactly what each of us needed to find our feet and next steps in our journeys. I have merged my marketing skills and my passion for music into a role as the Manager/Web Master/PR Cheerleader for that artist, Tommy Odetto. Earlier this year, I was responsible for spearheading a GoFundMe campaign, that recently reached its goal! The money will pay for time in the Foo Fighter's private studio this fall. This story is told with more detail on his GoFundMe campaign page at GoFundMe.com/Tommy606.
This past December, a completely random photo of myself that I had photoshopped into a picture of Law and Order:SVU stars Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay went viral on Buzzfeed and Someecards.com. See, it really is an incredible life. Even when I am not trying, I seem to have been gifted the ability to "find the glitter" in the most unsuspecting of places. I don't believe that is a fluke. I believe it is because once I get my mind set on something, I usually make it happen. Currently, I divvy my time between Milwaukee, Los Angeles and the Bay Area. What's in store for the next chapter? Perhaps you are a part of it. Let's find out?!
